As is generally understood today, .com became very popular as a leading tld whose public familiarity rose with the proliferation of the internet itself.
However, .com is one choice among many and is not the official country code of the United States. That honor rests exclusively with the dotUS web address. As of this date, there are over 1.7 million active .US domain name registrations (source: DomainTools' Internet Statistics).
My own search of the net shows an impressive number of corporations, businesses, and organizations using .US as the primary internet address for their website. Additionally, many local municipalities depend on .US to reach their consumers online. So, in essence, there exists an old and new dotUS footprint that continues to expand.
Because .US yields such immediate recognition as the abbreviation for the "United States", the extension will continue to gain increased importance moving forward as the internet becomes clogged with a variety of boutique web addresses, new tld's, and subdomain combinations. ICANN have proposed an "unlimited" introduction of new gtld's which many people believe will pollute the internet in an unprecedented fashion.
This phenomenon will make web addresses like .US even more popular and relied upon as internet users seek out websites ending in an extension that is logical and which provides security and familiarity. .US is the official internet brand of the United States. This country code brand is understood and accepted worldwide as is the comparable code of other leading countries ... such as .jp (Japan), .cn (China), .ca (Canada), and .de (Germany).
