Whether seeking calm amidst chaos or clarity to guide future ambitions, meditation can be a grounding part of life at any stage. Its accessibility and growing popularity have turned it into a lucrative wellness category. The global meditation market is estimated to be worth $7.41 billion, encompassing products and services such as books, apps, courses, and retreats. Yet, Brooklyn-based Walden.US has carved out a unique niche by specializing in meditation furniture that marries comfort with functionality.
Walden stands apart with its minimalist aesthetic, crafting tools that inspire reflection and serenity. The company's name pays homage to Walden Pond, the storied retreat that influenced transcendentalist thinkers like Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson. This inspiration is evident in Walden's mission to create intentional spaces that nurture mindfulness.
"We believe everyone needs a space of their own to reflect, be present, and find comfort," states Walden's website. The company’s thoughtfully designed products deliver on this promise—beautiful, functional pieces that elevate both the meditation experience and the surrounding environment.
Co-founder Eddie Cohen first experienced the transformative power of meditation as a Wharton undergraduate during a vipassana retreat. What started as a personal journey soon became a passion project that even won over his initial skeptics. “My parents thought I was some hippie, off my rocker,” Cohen shared. “But even they’re meditating now.”
They aren’t alone. Meditation has become the most popular complementary health practice in the U.S., with participation doubling since 2002—surpassing practices like yoga, massage therapy, and chiropractic care. However, when Cohen first discovered meditation, it was still viewed as niche, and the available tools felt uninspired.
Motivated to change this, Cohen teamed up with designer and former Google employee Calvin Lien in 2018 to launch Walden.
Walden’s philosophy is simple yet powerful: great design fosters great habits. From ergonomic benches and gel-infused mats to limited-edition collaborations with artists and fashion houses, Walden’s offerings are as visually stunning as they are practical. Their products have found homes in luxury wellness destinations like the Ritz-Carlton and Mandarin Oriental, cultivating a loyal following among wellness enthusiasts and design aficionados alike.
“[Meditation] is not always the most comfortable, nor is sitting still for extended amounts of time,” writes fan Caroline Williamson. “So adding a comfortable cushion into the mix definitely improves my meditation practice.”
Walden’s commitment to fostering connection extends beyond its physical products into its digital presence. By choosing a .US domain, the brand underscores its values of unity and purpose.
“I like how .US means together,” Cohen explained. This domain choice aligns with Walden’s mission to build a supportive community and create a meaningful online space for mindfulness practitioners.
For businesses like Walden, the .US domain offers more than just a web address—it serves as a reflection of authenticity and connection, echoing the brand's core ethos.
As more people embrace mindfulness and meditation, Walden continues to design tools that make these practices both accessible and enriching. From ergonomic cushions to sound and scent accessories and even cold plunge tubs, each product is thoughtfully crafted to support stillness and self-reflection. Walden ensures that moments of calm remain within reach, sustaining tranquility through life's inevitable ebbs and flows.
